Outblaze wins SME Award at DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Awards 2018

Technology pioneer and innovator honoured at one of the most prestigious and authoritative business awards in the region

 

HONG KONG, 07 December 2018:  Outblaze, the international technology conglomerate headquartered at Hong Kong’s Cyberport, was honoured at the DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Awards 2018, this year’s instalment of one of the longest-running and most prestigious business awards scheme in the territory. Outblaze won the SME Award, presented to the enterprise with up to 100 employees that best demonstrates innovation, risk management, operational excellence, social responsibility and employee relations.

 

Other companies honoured at the awards ceremony included Xiaomi Corporation (China Company Award), SML Group (International Award), Dah Chong Holdings (Enterprise Award), and Prenetics Group (Startup Award). Personal awards were presented to Dr Simon Kwok of Sa Sa International Holdings Limited (Business Person of the Year), Mrs Amy Lo of UBS (Executive Award), and Mr Lee Man Tat of Lee Kum Kee (Lifetime Achievement Award).

 

Outblaze was founded in 1998 in Hong Kong by Yat Siu and quickly became one of the city’s most prominent technology companies. Outblaze began innovating from its earliest days, developing cloud-based white label messaging and collaboration services in the late 1990s and innovating its way past the IT bubble and various Asian and global financial crises. In 2009, Outblaze sold its messaging division to IBM, and since then has focused primarily on creating, incubating, and/or accelerating various technology companies including:

 

  • Animoca Brands, the ASX-listed games, gamification, AI, and blockchain company named one of the world’s 50 best game developers by PocketGamer.biz; 

  • Dalton Learning Lab, a joint venture that offers STEAM courses and products for children, emphasizing divergent thinking and digital fluency to prepare them for the AI and robotics future; 

  • Chord Hero, a startup that creates innovative products that lowers barriers to music by making music-learning fun, affordable, and motivating; 

  • TurnOut Ventures, the joint venture with Turner Entertainment best known for transforming the emoticon character Tuzki into an international success;

  • OliveX, a company that develops innovative fitness products based on artificial intelligence.

 

These and various other entities make up the Outblaze Group, a network of companies spanning multiple industries including mobile, web, gaming, education, music, artificial intelligence, blockchain, health, exercise, and others.

 

Speaking at the award presentation held at the Grand Hyatt on the evening of 6 December 2018, Outblaze CEO and founder Yat Siu said: “It is a great honour for Outblaze to be recognized at the DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Awards. Yat Siu previously received the Young Entrepreneur Award at the DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Awards 2009.

About DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Awards

The Hong Kong Business Awards were established by DHL and the South China Morning Post in 1990 to acknowledge publicly the vital contributions made by individuals and by companies in maintaining and expanding the economic viability and international stature of Hong Kong; and to encourage and sustain the Hong Kong entrepreneurial spirit and highlight and recognize excellent standards of corporate management.

 

There are five categories for individuals, namely, Lifetime Achievement Award, Business Person of the Year Award, Executive Award, Owner-Operator Award and Young Entrepreneur Award; and four for companies, namely, International Award and China Company Award, Enterprise Award and SME Award.
